LAND RIGHTS: Adivasis, Dalits to march to Gandhinagar

Over 1 lakh Adivasis, Dalits and landless from across Gujarat will converge for a mahasammelan in Gandhinagar to demand land and other rights on November 26.

Organised by the Jameen Adhikar Zumbesh, an umbrella body for organisations and people working on land rights, the mahasammelan will put forth a set of demands before the government that have not been addressed despite several representations. Read more

A picture of neglect: How bauxite mining has affected tribals in AP’s East Godavari

Environmental rights activist K Rajendra says that it is common practice in the region to take permission for laterite mining, but instead indulge in bauxite mining.

“From 2002, tribal lands have been snatched and the environment exploited. Such a ruthless exploitation of the hills will result in big problems in the future for surrounding villages, wildlife and tribal culture,” he says. Read more

Sahay finds pathalgadi a pillar of anger

Former MP Ranchi Subodh Kant Sahay quite belatedly but at politically correct time said here today that tribal’s pathalgadi be seen as their anger and frustration as this population feels cheated and thrown out in the present dispensation here in the state. “ Yeh pathalgari adivasi ka gussa hai (Patthalgadi is anger of tribals) and no one should ignore or misread it,” he said.
