Tribal Commission to recommend legislation for ‘holistic development’

NEW DELHI: The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) is all set to recommend to the Centre to come up with a special provision for the development of Scheduled Tribes (STs) through an Act.

No law has been enacted to regulate the timely implementation of welfare programmes for STs or for protecting them from external pressure to compromise with their lands and livelihood, according to the Commission. Read more

Two Held In Agnes Attack Case

SHILLONG: Two persons were arrested on Friday in connection with the brutal attack on CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing and her companion Amita Sangma in East Jaintia Hills.
East Jaintia Hills SP Sylvester Nongtnger in a statement said the suspects, Elphon Dkhar and Meklison Siangshai, were arrested during a pre-dawn raid in the Kongong area.
Nongtnger said a suo motu case was taken up by police since the victims were not in a condition to file an FIR. Read more

Jairam Ramesh Writes to President Arguing Against Dilution of Land Acquisition Laws

Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member Jairam Ramesh has written to the President Ramnath Kovind arguing against the dilution of the Central land acquisition law by state laws. The former rural development minister has argued that states have used article 254 (2) ‘indiscriminately’ to frame state land acquisition laws that are in contravention with the Central law.
