While the world learnt about children labouring in mica mines in the Indian states of Jharkhand and Bihar, many companies using mica decided this was not acceptable, and started to act.

As 20,000 farmers reach Mumbai, Maharashtra reportedly agrees to reassess Adivasi land rights claims

The Maharashtra government on Thursday agreed to reassess at least 7,000 claims for land rights to be made out to farmers under the Forest Rights Act, hours after around 20,000 farmers reached Azad Maidan in South Mumbai, a rally organiser said. The protestors, most of them Adivasis, had walked to the city from the adjoining district of Thane over two days. Read more

The murderous attack on green activists in Meghalaya is an assault on our collective future

According to ‘Defenders of the Earth‘, a report released by international NGO, Global Witness, in 2017, being an environmental activist in India is a dangerous occupation. While Brazil tops the 2017 list with 49 deaths, India is ranked at fourth with 16 deaths. India got a special mention in the 2017 report as one of the countries where the situation is getting progressively worse, along with Colombia and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Read more

Mining conflicts multiply, as critics gather in Johannesburg

The World Social Forum’s “Thematic Forum on Mining and Extractivism” convened from November 12-15 here in Johannesburg, just after the Southern Africa People’s Tribunal on Transnational Corporations.

In between, at the site of the notorious massacre of striking mine workers in 2012 on the platinum belt to the west, a new was launched — Business as Usual after Marikana. It is critical not only of the mining company Lonmin, dozens of whose workers were shot dead, but of its international financiers. Read more
