‘Sustainable mining can be profitable’

Sustainable mining is not a new concept for Goan Sustainable mining is not a new concept for Goan companies. But a few unscrupulous fly-by-night operators were tarnishing the local mining industry, said stakeholders, on Saturday. Industry experts further said that contrary to popular perception, sustainability and profitability were complimentary.

In the backdrop of the recent closure of mining operations in the state, the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry organised a seminar aimed at discussing issues related to sustainability of mining operations. Read more

Goa’s environment faces problems from infrastructure boom

“Mining companies wanted to mine even the Western Ghat foothills. I refused permission. Seven of Goa’s rivers originate in the Ghats. Where will the water come from if you mine the hills,” former Goa principal chief conservator of forests Richard D’Souza told Mongabay-India. D’Souza, along with the late Governor of Goa, J.F.R. Jacob, notified two additional Western Ghat wildlife sanctuaries, Mhadei and Netravali, during a brief spell of President’s rule in 1999. Read more

District Mineral Foundation organizes training programme on PMKKKY

District Mineral Foundation of Geology and Mining Department, J&K, organized a district level training programme on Pradhan Mantri Khanij Kshetra Kalyan Yojana (PMKKKY) here today.During her address, Joint Director, G&M, Jammu, Manisha Sarin informed that the PMKKKY scheme aims towards transforming the lives of people living in areas which are affected directly or indirectly by mining.She said that under the scheme, several developmental and welfare programs are being implemented in mining affected areas that complement the existing ongoing schemes of State and Central Government.It also minimize the adverse impacts, during and after mining, on the environment, health and socio-economics of people in mining districts besides ensuring long-term sustainable livelihoods for the affected people in mining areas, she maintained.She said that the scheme is meant to provide for the welfare of areas and people affected by mining related operations, using the funds generated by District Mineral Foundations (DMFs). मध्य प्रदेश : माफिया के हौसले बुलंद, अवैध खनन में लगे ट्रैक्टर ने डिप्टी रेंजर को कुचला

मध्य प्रदेश में खनन का माफिया का आतंक जारी है. मुरैना के देवरी गांव में डिप्टी रेंजर को अवैध खनन में लगे ट्रैक्टर ने कुचल दिया है. उसकी मौके पर ही मौत हो गई है. फिलहाल इस मामले की और जानकारी के लिये अभी इंतजार है. लेकिन इस घटना के बाद से इतना तो तय है कि मध्य प्रदेश में खनन माफिया के हौसले इतने बुलंद हैं कि उनको पुलिस और प्रशासन का एकदम भय नहीं है. इसी साल फरवरी में आई एक रिपोर्ट की मानें अवैध खनन के मामले में मध्य प्रदेश दूसरे नंबर है. इसकी तस्दीक केन्द्र सरकार के आंकड़ों ने की है, लेकिन हैरानी इस बात की है कि इनमें एफआईआर महज़ कुछ फीसद मामलों में ही दर्ज हुई हैं. मध्य प्रदेश में राजगढ़, भिंड हो या छिंदवाड़ा धरती का सीना चीरकर अवैध उत्खनन की तस्वीरें पूरे प्रदेश से आती रहती हैं. यही वजह है केंद्रीय खनन मंत्रालय ने लोकसभा में दिए गए जवाब में माना है कि मध्य प्रदेश अवैध खनन के मामले में नंबर दो पर है. आंकड़ों के मुताबिक 2016-17 में अवैध उत्खनन के सबसे ज्यादा 31173 मामले महाराष्ट्र से आए, लेकिन एफआईआर 794 में दर्ज हुई. मध्य प्रदेश से 13880 मामले आए, लेकिन एफआईआर दर्ज हुई 516 में, जबकि आंध्र प्रदेश से 9703 मामले आए एफआईआर हुई 3 में. Labour safety ignored at Rampal plant

The death of 15-year-old Sajib, a worker at the Rampal Power Plant site, brought attention to an issue that went previously unnoticed — the lack of safety gears and the unsafe conditions that the plant workers have to face.

Sajib, on Friday, was electrocuted during work, as he was not wearing any protective gears. Three others were injured when they tried to save him.

They were rescued and taken to hospital by their co-workers. No authorities concerned of the plant, however, came to their aid. Read more
