Govt’s tribal instinct to deny rights

Adivasis have been losing forestlands, and the govt now appears to be going after activists and lawyers who fight for their rights.

After I covered the Kisan Long March earlier this year, travelling with the huge farmers’ group of mostly tribals from Nashik to Mumbai for a week, the so-called experts on my Twitter timeline presented a baffling argument: you can either be a farmer or an adivasi. I think the readers of this column know better.

Farmers have been perennially at the wrong end of land acquisition in India. Do Bigha Zameen, directed by Bimal Roy in 1953, is sadly still relevant. Adivasis are more vulnerable because most of them don’t even hold titles for the land they have tilled for decades. Under the Forest Rights Act (FRA), 2006, they are the rightful owners, but the law has hardly materialised on the ground. Read more

रीवा. कहने को तो नौ एकड़ जमीन की मालकिन। भूख और प्यास मिटाने के लिए गांव की गलियों में लोगों के सामने गिड़गिड़ा रही हैं। आप यकीन नहीं करेंगे सरकारी सिस्टम का ऐसा जख्म की दो वक्त की रोटी के लिए जिंदगी से जंग लड़ रही हैं। हम बात कर रहे हैं डभौरा क्षेत्र के पुरवा गांव की दो बुजुर्ग महिलाएं छोटकइया और बडक़इया आदिवासी की।
जमीन के इंतजार में दुनिया से चल बसे 9 आदिवासी परिवार जिले के जवा तहसील के घुमन गांव के सुदामापुर गांव में 9 आदिवासियों को खेतिहर किसान बनाने के लिए करीब 81 एकड़ जमीन का पट्टा दिया गया था, लेकिन जमीन पर कब्जा नहीं मिला। पट्टे धारक के परिवार में मात्र दो महिलाएं बची हैं। छोटकइया और बडक़इया के नाम से सरकारी रेकॉर्ड में नौ एकड़ जमीन तो है, लेकिन उस पर गांव के ही लोगों का कब्जा है। Read more

Police Take Three Rights Activists Into Custody, Raid Others’ Homes Across Cities

Mumbai: Police teams from different states are reported to have launched simultaneous raids at the homes of several people in Mumbai, Delhi, Ranchi, Goa and Hyderabad, including activists, priests, writers and lawyers.

Human rights advocate Sudha Bharadwaj’s home was raided and she was taken into custody this morning, sources told The Wire. According to the FIR, Bharadwaj has been charged under Sections 153a, 505, 117 and 120 of the IPC. Orders for the arrest came from Swargate police station, Pune, according to the police, and five policemen from Pune were part of the team that went to her house. Read more

अनिल अंबानी की राफेल के मामले में हिम्मत इतनी बढ़ गयी है कि वह कांग्रेस को लीगल नोटिस भेज रहे हैं उनका कहना है कि कांग्रेस अपनी जुबान काबू में रखे लेकिन सच मानिये इस मामले में कांग्रेस की भी पूरी गलती है !

गलती ये है कि उसने सिर्फ रॉफेल डील पर ही क्यों सवाल उठाए हैं दरअसल अनिल अंबानी की कम्पनी रिलायंस डिफेंस की हर डील में खुला भ्रष्टाचार दिखाई देता है जो मोदी सरकार के साथ के बिना संभव ही नही था इसलिए कांग्रेस को तो हर डील पर सवाल उठाने चाहिए थे ?

आज अम्बानी राहुल को पत्र लिखकर बोलते हैं कि भारत जो 36 राफेल जेट विमान फ्रांस से खरीद रहा है, उन विमानों के एक रुपये मूल्य के एक भी कलपुर्जे का विनिर्माण अम्बानी समूह द्वारा नहीं किया जाएगा. Read more

‘Government and industry take Adivasis’ land for development projects but ignore their interests’

The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes has been quite proactive in the last few months. It has prevailed upon the central government to withdraw orders that it thought “diluted” tribal rights, asked states to return “unfairly acquired tribal lands”, and reminded governors of their powers to protect Adivasis.
