Eviction notice served on “encroachers” at Ajjore village

Udhagamandalam: Based on an order by the Madras High Court, the forest department has issued notice to 140 encroachers in Ajjore village falling under Kattabettu range of forests in the Nilgiris. The encroached land, defined as reserve forest area in 1985 under Section 4 of Tamil Nadu Forest Act, extends up to nearly 300 acres.
In 1980, over 300 acres of lands in Ajjore village were identified as reserve forest area and a proposal under Section 4 of Tamil Nadu Forest Act 1882 was submitted by the forest department to the district administration. After due perusal by settlement officer, the lands extending up to 298.20 acres, leaving around 12 acres for the public usage of the villagers, was notified under Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Forest Act in G O no 279 dated March 7, 1980.
