Declare Western Ghats as Eco-Sensitive Area: Petition urges Karnataka CM

Campaigning organisation Jhatkaa has started an online petition, urging Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy to declare the Western Ghats as an eco-sensitive area (ESA), with the other five states agreeing to do so.

In September, it was reported that the Karnataka was not agreeing to the Centre’s draft notification to declare the ghats as an eco-sensitive area. The first notification in 2014 had made 56,825 sq km of the Western Ghats in six states — including Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu — eco-sensitive. Declaring the region as eco-sensitive prohibits activities like mining or setting up of red category industries that pollute the environment. Read more

Government plans to auction over 100 mines in six months

Having secured Rs 1.81 lakh crore in its kitty from e-auction of 50 mineral blocks, the government is looking to put on block another 100 mines in the next six months, according to the ministry of mines.

The government so far has auctioned 50 mines, including 23 limestone, 17 iron ore, 4 gold, 2 each of manganese and graphite blocks and one bauxite and diamond block each. Read more

Chhattisgarh’s ‘No-Go Area’ for Coal Mining Faces the Prospect of Being Opened Up

On September 27, the Parsa Open Cast Mine (OCM) in Chhattisgarh, was on the Expert Appraisal Committee’s (EAC) agenda for consideration of grant of environmental clearance. Parsa is one of 30 coal blocks in the Hasdeo Arand, an intact area of dense forest cover in central India. In 2009, the entire area was termed as a “No-Go Area” for coal mining based on a joint study conducted by the Ministry of Coal and Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC). Mega drinking water project for 5 mineral rich districts

Jharsuguda: Twenty-two blocks in five mineral rich districts will soon see their drinking water problem solved as the government has drawn up a project blueprint for this at an estimated cost of Rs 3,337.70 crore.

The mega project will come up soon to end the drinking water problems that the people of Sundargarh, Angul, Keonjhar, Jharsuguda and Jajpur districts have been facing. The lion’s share of the cost would come from the District Mineral Foundation (DMF) of the districts. Read more
