India last won the hockey World Cup in 1975. With Odisha as its main sponsor, the Indian team is hoping to build on its bronze victory at the 2021 Tokyo Games to clinch the world title this year.

If India wins the Hockey World Cup, the Odisha government will reward each player with Rs 1 crore in cash, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said Thursday, in a bid to raise the team’s competitive spirit as the international tournament begins in the state on January 13.

50,000 people can’t be uprooted overnight: Supreme Court stays Haldwani eviction

The Supreme Court stayed the Uttarakhand high court order of Haldwani eviction and asked for a workable arrangement to address the ‘land encroachment’ issue. The matter will be heard next on February 7.

The Supreme Court on Thursday stayed the planned eviction of the railways in the ‘encroached’ land in Uttarakhand’s Haldwani and said a workable arrangement has to be devised as 50,000 people can’t be uprooted overnight. In its order, the Supreme Court said the government will have to provide full rehabilitation of the people of the area. “In the meantime, there shall be a stay of the directions passed in the impugned order,” the Apex Court said barring any new construction or development on the land.

Odisha Govt Initiates Steps To Launch ‘Ama Hospital’ Programme Under 5T

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government on Wednesday launched steps for implementation of ‘Ama Hospital’ programme under 5T initiative to transform and strengthen the Community Health Centres, Sub-divisional Health Centres and District Headquarter Hospitals.

In a letter to all the district Collectors, Health and Family Welfare Secretary Shalini Pandit said that the state government has decided to launch the initiative for 5T transformation of identified hospitals as ‘Ama Hospital.”

Employment and the clean energy transition in India’s coal-producing states.

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the world will have to reduce its coal use by 73% to 97% by 2050 to be able to limit global warming to 1.5°C.

Taken at face value, reducing coal use immediately, irrespective of the costs, may seem like a no-brainer. But given the huge number of people and regions dependent on coal, the reality is more complicated. Take India, for example. A transition of this magnitude in that country would likely eliminate most coal mining jobs—a sector that provided 8.4 million jobs in India and elsewhere in 2021.
