HC pulls up AP over limestone mining

HYDERABAD: Stressing on the fact that it was keenly watching the response of AP authorities in dealing with big elements who are allegedly excavating thousands of tonnes of limestone worth hundreds of crores in an illegal way in Piduguralla, Nadikudi and other areas of Guntur, the Hyderabad high court on Thursday found fault with AP mining officials for launching large-scale prosecutions against small miners only. Explainer: what is silicosis and why is this old lung disease making a comeback?

Silicosis is a group of occupational lung diseases caused by breathing in silica dust. It has been described since ancient times, when miners and stone cutters were exposed to dust containing this crystalline mineral.

Silicosis was more common in Australia in the 1940s to 60s, particularly in construction and demolition workers. Growing awareness of the disease and the importance of reducing exposure to dust – for instance, wearing masks at work, wetting the dust and other safe work practices – has reduced the number of cases. WB seeks speedy land acquisition for Dasu power project

MANSEHRA: The World Bank has asked the district administration of Upper Kohistan to expedite land acquisition for the early completion of Dasu hydropower project.

A delegation of the international financial institution, which is offering 20 percent of the funds for the 4,300 megawatt project, visited the project site and met the Wapda and district administration officials. Read more

PMKKY scheme: Over one crore royalty collected from various miners in Pulwama

Deputy Commissioner Pulwama Ghulam Mohammad Dar Wednesday convened a meeting to discuss the modalities for the implementation of Pradhan Mantri Khanij Kshetra Kalyan Yojana (PMKKKY) in the district.
“The meeting was informed that District Mineral Foundation Pulwama has collected Rs 1,22,78,819 as royalty from various miners across the District while as Rs 176.26 lac royalty is anticipated by the end of the financial year,” the statement said. Read more
