TRIFED to focus on education of tribal communities

With less than 59% literacy among the tribal communities as per the 2011 Census, the Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India (TRIFED) is focussing on improving their education and health aspects, said TRIFED Chairman and Managing Director Ganta Ramesh Kumar here on Tuesday.

Speaking on the final day of his three-day visit to Chittoor district, Mr. Kumar said the schemes introduced under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs would target promoting the marketing of forest produce, skill development and improving the livelihood of the tribal community. “Schemes focussing on self-employment would encourage individuals as well as groups to develop their talents/inclination such as agriculture, horticulture, fisheries etc. On June 25, we organised a training programme in making incense sticks – ‘Amma Padmavati Agarbatthi’, for nearly 30 people hailing from tribal communities,” he said.

Brinda asks tribals to fight for their rights

“Struggles have become inevitable,” she said and threatened to intensify agitation against GO Ms. No. 97 authorising the AP Mineral Development Corporation to mine bauxite ore from Sapparla and other blocks on the Andhra-Odisha border. “We will not allow others to lay their hands on natural resources over which only tribal people have the right come what may,” she declared. State Level Consultation – Mandvi, Surat

State Level Consultation on Children in Mining Area, DMF, PESA was held at Mandvi, Surat, Gujarat on 11th June’ 2017 – 133 participants

In the Consultation, there were discussions on Self-rule in village level, PESA – Role of Gram Sabha, Election of Sarpanch, Schedule V & VI of the constitution, migration and displacement of families due to development projects like mining, nuclear power, power projects, reservoirs etc. One issue that was prominently discussed was the plight of migrant laborers especially women and children. It was also highlighted that without the free and prior consent of villagers not a single development project should be cleared by the authorities.

The Secretary-General introduced the theme of the workshop and why children’s rights should not be neglected especially in the mining areas. A short documentary film “Falling through the cracks – Children and Mining” was screened and followed by a detailed session on the plight of children in mining areas by the Secretary-General of mm&P. A participatory approach was followed in sensitizing the people on violation of child rights in the context of Children in mining areas.

VIth General Assembly

The Sixth General Assembly of the mm&P, organized from 13th May to 15th May 2017 at Kotagiri in Tamil Nadu, witnessed the participation of about 236 volunteers, coming from dozens of struggle groups representing 17 states across the country. People from various paths of life, from activist, journalist, lawyer, environmentalist, expert, student, farmer and women, to former deputy-director of Geological Survey of India KV Krishnamurthy, Rajasthan’s “water man” Rajendra Singh, as guest speaker, participated in the meet. Float policy, hand over India’s mining wealth to locals with right to inheritance: Representation to President, PM

A high-level meeting of India’s top advocacy group, mines, minerals and People (mm&P), has decided to represent to President Pranab Kumar Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to implement the concept of “intergenerational equity” to make sure that the next generations are equal shareholders of the natural resources.
The controversial concept, which is directed against corporate houses and other business interests seeking to mine away the natural wealth, has been coined by Goa Foundation, a Goa-based voluntary organization. The concept states, those who depend on natural resources alone are their rightful owners.Read more
