India’s first integrated gold mine set to start in Andhra Pradesh

Vijayawada: Work on independent India’s first integrated Greenfield gold mining project in Andhra Pradesh is expected to begin in the next two months.

The project proponent— an Indo-Australian company — is in the process of completing land acquisition in Jonnagiri of Kurnool district. Commercial production is expected to begin in the third quarter of 2020. Read more

Centre wakes up to unspent funds under MSP, orders review of scheme

The scheme, which was launched by Congress-led UPA government in 2013-14 financial year, involves fixing MSP for identified minor forest produce, which are collected by tribals in remote areas. These tribals then sell MFPs in village haats. If the market prices fall below MSP, the state government agencies move in to procure the minor forest produce. The scheme also involved setting up of value addition centres at district levels so that tribals can get better rates for the produce collected. Read more

Rio Tinto diamond mining set for revival

Bhopal: In a significant development, Madhya Pradesh government has initiated a move to revive the Bunder Diamond project, which was shelved after the British mining behemoth Rio Tinto withdrew from it three years ago.

The state government has proposed the Centre to grant fresh mining lease for Bakshawaha diamond block in Chhatarpur district under backward region of Bundelkhand in MP to facilitate revival of the abandoned Bunder Diamond project.

Labour min decides to allow women to work in underground coal mines

Present rules do not allow women to work in underground mines. This provision of allowing them to work in underground coal mines is expected to bring more employment opportunities for them.

New Delhi: The Labour Ministry has decided to amend rules for allowing women to work in underground coal mines during day time and in open cast mines round the clock, for the first time, in a bid to bring gender equity and generate job opportunities.

“The ministry has decided to extend the timing of women workers in coal mines initially and would be extended in other such mining sectors on the basis of the initiative. A notification in the regard has already been sent for publication and it would be enforced in next couple of days,” a senior official said. Read more

Poor implementation of environmental laws is now a global problem, says the report that demystifies the reasons behind the failure

The world fares poorly on implementation of environmental laws and regulations despite the fact that 38 times more green laws have been framed and approved in the last four decades, says the United Nations (UN) in its first ever global assessment of environmental laws. India serves as a perfect example to this issue.

India’s people and the environment have been paying the price for its lethargic and poor state of environmental governance. This is reiterated by a high-level committee set up the environment ministry in 2014. Like the Water Act, which was implemented in 1974, a number of laws and regulations have been existing for more than four decades now, but are proving to be ineffective. Read more
