A six-year-old kindergarten student in Uttar Pradesh has petitioned the National Green Tribunal (NGT) against a poultry farm near his school, seeking its closure on the grounds that foul smell from the unit is causing breathing problems among children in the area.
Arjun Malik, from Shaamli, in his petition against Highteck Layer Farm and the state of Uttar Pradesh, stated that despite several notices by the state Pollution Control Board and protests by the locals, the poultry farm had continued operation.
New Delhi: More than 96,000 cases of illegal mining for major and minor minerals were reported in various states, including Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh, in 2016-17, Parliament was informed today.
The number of such cases was 1,10,476 in 2015-16. Read more

Mines, Minerals and People (MM&P), and other organisations, will meet members of Parliament in New Delhi on July 26 to prevail upon them to pressure the government on the establishing of Future Generation Funds in all States for the welfare of the children, curbing of illegal mining, the proper utilisation of funds collected under District Mineral Foundation, and ensuring that mining leases are given only after the prior approval of the gram sabhas.
