Maharashtra govt. forcibly acquiring land for Samruddhi expressway, claims Opposition

The Congress and NCP on Tuesday accused the State government of forcible land acquisition for its ambitious Samruddhi expressway project.

Congress and NCP MLCs listed a question during question hour in the Legislative Council over the alleged betrayal of farmers during land acquisition.

In a written reply to the question, State Public Works (Public Undertaking) Minister Eknath Shinde denied any forcible acquisition, and said the land was being acquired after proper negotiations with farmers.

Telangana’s Kaleswaram project gets final environmental clearance

The Kaleswaram project, being built across Godavari River in Telangana, has received environmental clearance from the Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Ministry, it was announced on Monday.

The Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) on irrigation projects gave the clearance for the project at its meeting held on December 5, according to the minutes of the meeting released in Hyderabad by the Telangana government.

Being built at a cost of about Rs 80,499 crore, the project will divert 180 TMC of water to irrigate 7.38 lakh hectares.

B.H.P. Billiton, Acknowledging Climate Change, to Quit Coal Group

MELBOURNE, Australia — One of the world’s largest coal companies, acknowledging the growing momentum toward addressing climate change, said it planned to pull out of a major industry group over its environmental stances.

B.H.P. Billiton, the British-Australian mining company, said in a report Tuesday that it planned to withdraw from the World Coal Association, an international lobbying group, because of differences in climate and energy policies. The report also noted that B.H.P. would review its relationship with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in light of the Trump administration’s decision to withdraw from the Paris climate accord.

Vellingiri Tribal Society vows to hold public meeting in Chennai to expose Isha

Forced to call off its first anniversary celebrations due to the denial of venue by a private hotel that was allegedly threatened by the powers that be, the Vellingiri Hill Tribal Protection Society has planned to conduct a public meeting at a public place in Chennai shortly.

Formed to retrieve the 44 acres of land, that originally belongs to them, from the Isha Foundation headed by godman Jaggi Vasudev, the association had organised an eventful celebration entailing a workshop having speakers, including ‘water man’ Rajendra Singh, Thirumurugan Gandhi of May 17 Movement, Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam founder Kolathur Mani, Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam general secretary K Ramakrishnan and environmental activist Piyush Manush among others, on board.

Eviction notice served on “encroachers” at Ajjore village

Udhagamandalam: Based on an order by the Madras High Court, the forest department has issued notice to 140 encroachers in Ajjore village falling under Kattabettu range of forests in the Nilgiris. The encroached land, defined as reserve forest area in 1985 under Section 4 of Tamil Nadu Forest Act, extends up to nearly 300 acres.
In 1980, over 300 acres of lands in Ajjore village were identified as reserve forest area and a proposal under Section 4 of Tamil Nadu Forest Act 1882 was submitted by the forest department to the district administration. After due perusal by settlement officer, the lands extending up to 298.20 acres, leaving around 12 acres for the public usage of the villagers, was notified under Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Forest Act in G O no 279 dated March 7, 1980.
