Declare Western Ghats as Eco-Sensitive Area: Petition urges Karnataka CM

Campaigning organisation Jhatkaa has started an online petition, urging Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy to declare the Western Ghats as an eco-sensitive area (ESA), with the other five states agreeing to do so.

In September, it was reported that the Karnataka was not agreeing to the Centre’s draft notification to declare the ghats as an eco-sensitive area. The first notification in 2014 had made 56,825 sq km of the Western Ghats in six states — including Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu — eco-sensitive. Declaring the region as eco-sensitive prohibits activities like mining or setting up of red category industries that pollute the environment. Read more

Chhattisgarh’s ‘No-Go Area’ for Coal Mining Faces the Prospect of Being Opened Up

On September 27, the Parsa Open Cast Mine (OCM) in Chhattisgarh, was on the Expert Appraisal Committee’s (EAC) agenda for consideration of grant of environmental clearance. Parsa is one of 30 coal blocks in the Hasdeo Arand, an intact area of dense forest cover in central India. In 2009, the entire area was termed as a “No-Go Area” for coal mining based on a joint study conducted by the Ministry of Coal and Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC). NGT to Haryana Govt: What’s your stand on Aravalli realty?

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Tuesday directed Haryana government to submit its stand on a 2017 Union environment ministry report that stated that a housing project of Bharti Land Ltd. in Aravallis, Faridabad district, was proposed on ‘deemed’ forest land. The deadline for the report has been set to September 30. The Tribunal also directed the ministry to submit its final report on the issue during the next hearing on November 12. Read more

Group taps CM on unabated mining

Shillong: Illegal coal mining and transportation is still on in spite of the ban by the National Green Tribunal, a group has alleged in a petition to Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K. Sangma.

The Wildlife and Environment Protection Group from West Jaiñtia Hills, in the petition, alleged that in spite of the serious effort by the NGT to preserve the environment, there are brisk coal-mining activities and environmental destruction at various places all over the state. Read more
